Protect Your Bike During Hurricane Milton – Essential Tips
We hope you’re staying safe and calm as we prepare for Hurricane Milton. First and foremost, we want to let you know that we’re thinking of you and the entire Sarasota community during this time. Our store will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and we’ll reassess when it’s safe to reopen based on the storm’s impact.
As you focus on keeping your home and family safe, don’t forget about your bike. Whether it’s your main mode of transport or part of your training gear, here are some tips to help protect it during the storm.
For Regular Bikes:
-
Clean and Dry Your Bike – Remove dirt and moisture to prevent rust.
-
Lubricate the Chain and Moving Parts – Apply lube to protect your bike from humidity and rain.
-
Store Indoors and Elevate if Possible – If you can, bring your bike inside to keep it safe from wind and flying debris, preferably up from potential storm surge.
-
Use a Waterproof Cover – If indoor storage isn’t an option, secure your bike with a high-quality waterproof cover.
-
Remove Accessories – Take off any lights, computers, or water bottles to avoid damage or loss.
-
Slightly Deflate the Tires – This helps reduce pressure changes and protects your tubes.
For Electric Bikes or Bikes with Electronic Shifting:
-
Charge Your Battery – Make sure your electric bike’s battery is fully charged before the storm in case of power outages.
-
Remove and Store the Battery – If possible, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
-
Cover Electrical Components – Use plastic wrap or a waterproof cover to protect sensitive electronic parts like the display and shifters.
-
Unplug and Disconnect – Disconnect any electronics or battery systems to avoid damage from possible power surges or moisture.
-
Elevate Your Bike – Keep it off the ground to avoid potential flooding damage.
